Looking for a therapist, it is useful to keep a few questions in mind:
- What training and background does this therapist have?
- Have they worked with issues like mine in the past? How do they approach this kind of issue?
- Do they have meeting times available that will work with my schedule?
- Is their fee manageable for me at this time?
- How do I feel in this person's presence?
- Am I treated with respect and consideration?
- Does this therapist demonstrate an understanding of the problem I'm facing?
- Does the therapist communicate clearly with me?
- Are they comfortable answering my questions?
- Do I feel there is a good rapport between me and this therapist?
Good therapy can feel uncomfortable and difficult at times. However, if there is something about the therapist that makes you feel uncomfortable, take your time to consider your response. You might address your concerns wit the therapist, and see if they respond in a manner that puts you at ease. If you are still unsure, consider meeting more then one therapist before deciding who you want to work with, so you can compare and evaluate. A strong working alliance between therapist and client is an important factor in a successful therapy.
